The nr.1 limiting factor to their success in Europe?

Work and residency permits.

You can be physically in Europe, working with a valid visa... But if that is tied to your employer, compared to someone with a valid Permanent Residency (PR), you’re playing on hard mode.

Your highest priority — to be balanced out with other important priorities, of course — should be: being on a path to PR while you’re living in Europe.

There’s many ways to get there, and I’ll expand on those in the future. But a simple and effective way is:

⭐️ Remote Job + Digital Nomad Visa ⭐️

1. Land a remote job that allows you to work in Europe

2. Apply for a Digital Nomad (DN) Visa

3. Start your path to PR

IMPORTANT: not all DN Visas lead to PR. Which is why you should strongly prioritise getting a DN Visa in a country which does.

The best 4 countries I’ve identified for this purpose:

🔥 Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece 🔥

My favorite is Greece 🇬🇷 — it has the lowest taxes among these 4, while still offering a comparable lifestyle to the other 3 (better or worse depending on your taste).

That said: easiness of access and bureaucracy also matter. It might be worth applying to all 4 countries to maximise your chances.

Countries I don’t recommend:

• Croatia — great country, but no path DN → PR

• Estonia, Hungary — no path DN → PR

Am I missing something?

This is my ranked top 4:

1. 🇬🇷 Greece

2. 🇪🇸 Spain

3. 🇵🇹 Portugal

4. 🇮🇹 Italy

We factor in easiness of permanent residency (discussed above), and also:

• Bureaucracy and delays in the process

• Tax rates

Portugal loses a few points on bureaucracy. Italy stays in the game, but I wouldn’t recommend it to the majority of tech workers — especially those aiming at 6-figure jobs (taxes get rough).

Spain has: a consolidated DN Visa process, no big delays, good weather, solid infrastructure, the Beckham Law for lower taxes in the first few years, a growing tech market once you reach PR, and is generally foreigner-friendly.

But... it’s Greece 🇬🇷 that takes the top spot — for someone committed to remote work and entering Europe via a DN Visa.

Here’s why:

1. Effective DN Visa application and examination process

2. Great weather, cost of living, and lifestyle

3. Best taxes among these 4 countries (see article linked in first comment)

4. Learning Greek ROI

Because once you get PR or citizenship:

→ Move to Cyprus for an even more international and tax-friendly environment

→ Or stay in Greece, if you loved your time there

→ Or after citizenship, move wherever you like in Europe

What is it?

A flat-rate income tax for freelancers and small business owners:

• 5% for your first five years

• 15% afterwards

Works only if you operate under a sole proprietorship (”Partita Iva”), and only if your revenue is below €85’000 per year.

Profit margins are calculated “automatically”:

• You can’t deduct business expenses

• Instead: 78% of your revenue (in case of tech workers) is considered taxable

Then, you pay the income tax on that 78% of revenue.

On top of this, you also need to pay social security: called “INPS”, in Italy.

• The amount will depend on a few details, but it’s around 26%

• This also is applied just on the 78% taxable base

Some example math at €60k revenue:

Case 1: 5% income (first 5 years after opening):

• Taxable base: €60k × 78% = €46,800

• INPS (26.07%) = €12,200

• Income tax (5% on €34,600) = €1,730

• Total burden = ~€13,930 (~23% of gross)

Case 2: 15% (normal / after 5 years):

• Taxable base: €60k × 78% = €46,800

• INPS (26.07%) = €12,200

• Income tax (15% on €34,600) = €5,190

• Total burden = ~€17,390 (~29% of gross)

At other income levels, it’s still roughly the same:

• 23% for the first 5 years

• ~29% afterwards

It’s not single digit tax rates.

But: 23% first, and 29% later, total tax, for Italy... It’s not too bad!

The 85k revenue cap will be low for many people.

But there’s a clear segment of people for which this is an interesting proposition:

• Remote worker making 50-85k per year

• Prioritising WLB and lifestyle

• Living in Rome, Catania, or some other good value Italian town

It’s not a bad life.

Real estate in Italy outside of Milan is dirt cheap.

Save some money working abroad, move to Italy with Forfettario, buy a house, live rent free, enjoy some of the best lifestyles in the world while working a chill job.

3.5-5.5k euros per month gets you very far in many Italian cities.

People now even say that it’s easier than getting a job:

One of the arguments often made around the “business > job” narrative, is that the job market is more competitive now than 5/10 years ago.

Well…

That might be true. But it’s not less competitive than succeeding in business.

I think a lot of people don’t know how to play the tech career game, and that’s why they might think it’s that rigged/hard.

Personally: I like my day to day life much more now than when I was working a job.

But… It’s not easier than working a job. Far from it. And most people don’t make it.

That’s just the truth.

Making the case for it having become the best place for tech workers in Europe.

A lot has changed since then, but the positioning hasn’t.

Poland is still dominating Europe’s tech markets and careers.

In general, it’s a country-model that works:

And where opportunities, as a consequence, are created.

And this is only part of the story.

As we discussed several times:

high-pay remote is the new best tech career path

Simply put:

And Poland is a great hub for having a remote career.

Here’s an article I once published about my top 4 picks for remote careers in Europe:

Beyond the 4 aforementioned countries, there’s several others that can be good for remote workers, depending on one’s priorities.

But:

There’s no other country in Europe that combines remote work efficiency with a huge local high-paying market.

And this is the unique value proposition of Poland.

In addition to being a “based” country:

The final destination/goal might not be Poland

IMO: the best is ending up with a remote income, and then choosing where to live based on what you like, rather than “where the jobs are”.

So, in the end, you might opt for other alternatives than Poland, depending on what you value: weather, geopolitics, nature, food, big/small cities, seaside, lakes, culture, social life, etc.

Maybe you’ll stay in Poland still (plenty of remote earning people do).

Me, personally: I’ve recently been looking into Croatia.

But everyone’s priorities and taste are different.

Other people like the stability and infra of Switzerland, others the cost effectiveness and seaside life of Albania, others the 1% tax of Georgia, some prefer Spain, Portugal and Italy, many like the lifestyle and tax-efficiency of Cyprus, etc.

But Poland might be the best bridge to the final destination

• Largest amount of junior and mid-level roles in Europe

• Can start onsite, learn, up-skill, put top-name companies on the CV

• Then land remote gig from Poland

• After remote income feels stable and savings are high-enough → luxury of relocating wherever you want to

Here's what "life after FIRE" looks like 👇️

First, a brief recap:

• I pursued a high-paying career in tech (type of jobs you find on Euro Top Tech)
• Saved -> invested -> saved -> good $ buffer
• Started side hustles (tech career coaching + Euro Top Tech + Remote GOATs 🐐)
• Money buffer invested to secure retirement
• Side hustle paying the bills

So, technically: it's more of a CoastFIRE than a full FIRE.

But, the way I built the side hustle, makes it very similar: pretty much every single day I wake up and do whatever I want, work-wise.

Here’s 4 truths about FIRE:

1. You'll still want to do *something* in your life

Even if you don't need money.

I think, for many people, this "something" will need to make you feel engaged, satisfied, on a growth path, and so on.

Not even my grandparents in their 90s sit all day doing nothing.

That would be a somewhat depressing life.

2. If you're doing something useful, there'll usually be money

In the end, it's a bit hard to feel satisfied and fulfilled if you're not sure that what you're doing matters.

Now: there's many things you can do that have an impact and make no money, but most DO make *some* money (money is a good proxy for perceived value).

If you watched Space Jam: do you remember how Michael Jordan felt, playing baseball and being a noob at it?

3. The above two points imply that -> You'll always be kinda working

This is a good realisation to come at, IMO.

Because it can shift the understanding of "chasing FIRE".

You might realise that making 3M is not the only or the smartest way to "escape the rat race". Maybe you just need to course correct your life or career.

4. Life is not a dream

It's also important to understand that "full freedom" is a silly concept.

There's no "absolute freedom".

The same way I show up to my coaching calls, I also do with friends' hangouts, or going on a trip with my gf if I promised her we'll go, or if I want to get stuff done 'cause weeks ago I started a new project that I now want to see go live.

We're always "in the trenches" - so to say.

I find the "financial freedom" concept a bit weird. It just means being more rich.

But, for most people: while not being poor is great, being financially comfortable, or rich, or very rich, doesn't make a huge difference.

Also: if you want to get rich, just say it.

Don't say: "I want to get rich so I become free / escape something".

That's just in your head.

In conclusion:

IMO, the best way to "FIRE" is to start saying "no" to the things you don't want to, as early as you can.

You might realise that you can already afford a lot of no's.

And you'll eventually discover that you'll never get completely rid of all the things you don't like. And that's normal.

As I mentioned in the past, in my opinion: remote is the future of tech workers wanting a great life and career.

Once you’re remote: it doesn’t really matter if you make your money with a (tech) job, a SaaS or an online business - the variables will be the same across the board (taxes, cost of living, lifestyle, etc).

This is the idea behind this “hybrid” product/platform.

And this is just the start.

1. Coaching graduate who got a 150k remote job last year (from Spain) recently getting bombarded by emails and LinkedIn recruiter DMs about 100k+ remote opportunities

2. There’s many companies offering such opportunities and the number is actually way higher than high paying big tech onsite opportunities in Europe (recently I’ve been adding hundreds of 100k+ remote roles each week to EuroTopTech)

3. Offshoring is unstoppable, might as well learn to ride the wave

If you’re a junior engineer

It’s gonna be almost impossible to get a $100k+ remote job in tech (at least straight away).

In this case, the best you can do is this:

But DO IT. Don’t wait:

Tech Stack

Tech stack tier lists for high-paying tech roles:

1. TS/node.

70% of high-paying fully remote companies use it.

Being a backend/fullstack dev with extensive experience in js/ts/node will open the most doors.

Of course: language is not enough. Also know your infra, systems and UI/UX chops.

2. Python

Used often either for tooling/scripting or AI/ML stuff.
Some companies use it for backend services too.

In 2026: just know your way around Python. It's not gonna get you the job alone, but for the right niches / some companies is a must have.

3. Go

Several mid-scale startup/scaleup use it and if you know it it can be a competitive advantage.

4. Rust

Similar to Go, but more niche / more competitive advantage: fewer roles, but if you know it and they look for people who know it, it can almost by itself get you the job.

A bit of a wild card. Can be one of the best to know, in some ways, because of the low-competition access to high-paying jobs in the crypto space.

5. C++

Unexpected, but I'm increasingly seeing top tier ($200k+ FULLY-REMOTE) roles requiring it, and overall knowledge of low-level programming.

Often in security, sometimes in crypto, sometimes in finance.

6. Java

Generally popular, but more for old school companies and big tech.
Usually also acceptable as an OOP knowledge proof for remote startups too.

Some remote companies also use it. Especially some doing latency-sensitive web services: in this sense, you can make similar considerations to the ones done for C++ in 5.

7. PHP/Ruby

Some companies use it.
