This is the story of a customer of mine, who’s been in my coaching program for 2 times:
A few things to learn here:
1. Application-to-interview rate
For this customer, it was 10-25% when being helped by a professional (me), shooting for both:
Care per application (e.g. apply only to real fits, ideally with referral)
Volume (still sending applications if a referral couldn’t easily be found)
If you’re targeting a broader market (not just big tech / high-paying remote), your rate will likely be <5%. Because it’s a different game, where volume has more value.
2. Interview-pass rate
For him: 15-25%.
This might be realistic for someone targeting normal jobs too:
My customer had more support (coaching program)
But was also interviewing at top places (competitive/hard to pass)
In general, if you’re doing a normal job search with medium preparation and skills, this rate might be closer to 5-15%.
3. Support + mastering the game gets you better numbers
You can see how the rates in the 2nd iteration of the program, after almost 2 years of him being on the job search grind, gave clearly better numbers than in his first iteration of the program.
This is because, by then, he had time to:
get plenty of support
try and fail + learn
refine his strategy
improve skills
You can also see how the almost 12 months in-between the 2 iterations of the program brought the least results of all. This is because doing it alone is harder than doing it with the help of someone who does this for a living.
Getting a job in 2026 is tough.
You need quality + quantity.
So brace yourself. Get ready to receive many rejections.
It’s part of the game.
Ignore them emotionally, learn from them analytically.
Don’t complain about the market when you:
Send hundreds of applications
Fail tens of interviews
Instead, improve your job search strategy:
Source better companies
Prepare more for interviews
You only need one offer and that offer will come if you keep trying.
