Dubai???
I never considered moving to Dubai. Especially as a developer.
But these days I keep hearing about how much money they’re pouring over there into tech and AI in particular.
I personally know people who had senior/staff+ roles in big tech in Europe or in the US, who got successfully “poached” by some UAE companies to relocate there to work.
The pay is often in the $100-400k range, the income tax is 0%, the cost of living is about the same as Milan, Berlin or Barcelona (less than London, Paris or Zurich).
Lifestyle-wise, here’s some pros:
Sun 12 months a year
Good sea (I think similar to Barcelona in terms of “quality” - probably even better)
Consumer convenience and level of service: you can get literally anything delivered to your house in less than 20/30 minutes; + maids, drivers etc are affordable (as it’s often the case in emerging economies)
Fast-growth trajectory: it’s a place WITH capital that also ATTRACTS capital; this result in many opportunities and a constant influx of talented people moving there
Networking can be good because many people go there to build
Very safe
I heard it can be both fun for young people and good for families
If Silicon Valley became great because of availability of capital and talent, Dubai seems to be on a good track: capital in UAE is multiples of that in Silicon Valley. Talent is also going there. It’s the nr.1 country where millionaires are moving to [source], and it’s starting to attract tech founders too [example].
Good location if you want to be globally connected: in less than 7/8 hours you can be in Europe, Africa and Asia.
Some cons:
No seasons
Very few green spaces
Some air pollution
Not so walkable
Monarchy (I guess pro or con depending on your preference ^^)
For 4 months every year the avg temperature is more than 30°C
Less variety - I guess - of things we take for granted in Europe like great local wines and food in general
It can be a more volatile and less predictable place than other more stable ones (e.g. Switzerland or Singapore)
Not much to travel around in less than 3/4 hours of flight, unlike Europe where in 1 to 4 hours flight you have access to every kind of environment: cities, beaches, mountains, in addition to different kind of vibes like Northern Europe, Western or Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Balkans, Arab like Turkey or North Africa, middle eastern like Cyprus or Israel, etc.

I’ve been interviewing around uae / Saudi recently. Most jobs advertised online have terrible salaries but specialist recruiters have some good tech in finance jobs that will pay $150k usd 0% tax + bonus + relocation. Seriously considering this.
