Euro Top Tech Jobs - Week 54
NEW: Composite Country Ranking view on EuroTechMoney.com (to help measure which countries are better for devs in Europe)
Best European Countries for Developers: New Data Rankings
Choosing where to live as a dev in Europe is both difficult and important.
To make it easier, I've added a new Country Ranking view on EuroTechMoney.com
The below image shows today's top 10.
What the Columns Tell You:
People Supported: how many mouths your take-home pay can cover
Lifestyle Score: purchasing power (1 = frugal, 2 = comfortable, 3 = luxurious)
Yearly Savings (€): what's left after tax and living costs
These values are calculated averaging the 800+ crowdsourced contributions to the site.
The Best Countries?
Poland
Near-Western pay, moderate costs → high savings, lifestyle and ability to support a family.
Lithuania
Greatest savings (€43k) thanks to good salaries (often remote) and low taxes and CoL.
Switzerland
Still great, but family costs lowers its overall score.
Serbia
Great lifestyle-to-cost ratio, even if cash left over is smaller.
3 Tiers
If we look at the above top-10, we can see roughly 3 country-tiers:
Tier 1: Poland 🇵🇱
Composite Score: 69.7
Only country to score high on all three metrics:
Yearly Savings
Lifestyle / Purchasing Power
People Supported by One Salary
Tier 2: Serbia 🇷🇸 • Lithuania 🇱🇹 • Switzerland 🇨🇭
Composite Score range: 66.9 – 64.3
Each excels on two metrics and does well on the third.
Tier 3:
3a – UK 🇬🇧 • Bulgaria 🇧🇬 (55 – 53.4)
3b – Denmark 🇩🇰 • Romania 🇷🇴 • Germany 🇩🇪 (50.1 – 46.9)
We Need More Data!
Serbia (17 entries), Lithuania (15), Bulgaria (8) and Belgium (10) still have small sample sizes.
If you're a dev living in any of these countries, please add your numbers! Also tell your friends living there 🙌
Link to contribute is here (takes <2 min, fully anonymous).
Let's see if these countries can keep - or climb - their spots once we pass 20+ submissions each.
My bet? They will 🤓
What do you think?
Of course these numbers don't tell the whole story
And there's many variable that matter that aren't mentioned here, like:
Lifestyle preferences (food, culture, weather etc)
Infrastructure and quality of life metrics (safety, corruption, etc)
Public services, pension etc
Still... It's better than nothing :D
I started brainstorming some possible improvements in this LinkedIn thread.
I don’t want to “denature” the concept of the site, and that’s why I’m not sure about adding other metrics regarding “quality of life” variables.
It can get tricky if you start adding them, here’s some considerations (from the above thread):
What do YOU think?
Let me know what you think about the ideas shared in the above thread.
Which metric matters the most to you: savings, lifestyle, or family support? What about mixing it up with some Numbeo features, like Numbeo’s quality of life index or some of its metrics (healthcare, safety etc)?
And which country would you pick?
Let me know!
And don’t forget to contribute if you haven’t already :D
