Dreaming of ditching the 9-to-5 to "be your own boss"?
I get the appeal: freedom, flexibility, direct upside.
But after a year building my own micro-businesses (career-platform SaaS + coaching), here's my recommendation:
1️⃣ Get paid to learn first
A few years inside good companies will:
Sharpen hard skills (tech, design, ops - whatever your lane is)
Show you real-world problems customers actually pay to solve
Let you watch how sales, support, and product really work - while getting paid
2️⃣ Freelance before you "found"
Freelancing feels like business-ownership with training wheels:
You still sell and deliver, but the scope is clear
Low overhead, quick feedback, more predictable income
You'll discover fast whether you like hunting for clients or prefer a steady paycheck
(Plenty of people learn they prefer a great job to running a business. That's fine. A "boring" €150k remote role often beats entrepreneurial roller-coasters.)
3️⃣ Build where you already have leverage
My own projects came straight from personal pain points as a dev in Europe:
EuroTopTechJobs.com → Born from my need to track Europe's top tech roles
SixFigureEuroEngineer.com → Coaching based on career strategies I'd already used
Could I have chased the latest AI wrapper hype? Sure. But competing where you have zero edge is a good way to burn months and motivation.
4️⃣ Keep the scope tiny - then iterate
MVP in a Google Sheet or Gumroad doc
First euro in the bank > perfect feature list
Feedback loops > stealth mode
Reality Check - my results
I'm one year in, still learning daily, still earning less than I could as an employee - but the autonomy is worth it (for me).
If you're thinking of testing the waters:
Start with a freelance project on top of your day job
See how it feels to invoice, negotiate, and deliver without a manager
If you love it, double-down. If not, enjoy the clarity (and your stable salary).
