Zurich getting some relevant traction on AI opportunities

• Anthropic opened a legal entity in Zurich some time ago (probably because they’re planning to open an engineering/R&D office there): source.

• OpenAI has just announced that they’ve hired 3 staff research scientist from Google DeepMind Zurich to open an OpenAI R&D office in Zurich: source.

This is significant because they are the top 2 players - together with Perplexity.ai - when it comes to “modern AI” / LLM.

They pay a lot: more than FAANG, on par or more than HFT.

And they operate in a field that it’s fair to say it’s the number one field in tech right now.

As far as I know, this would be their only engineering/R&D presence in Europe except for Anthropic’s London office.

The strategy is clear: poach top AI research talent from companies doing R&D in AI in Zurich like Google, Oracle or Meta. And to hire PhDs grads from ETH/EPFL.

This can influence the local ecosystem in positive ways, probably indirectly increasing opportunities at “lower tier” AI companies too.
